Description
The drive starts by picking you up at your accommodation, then once briefed on the trip itself we commence by 4WD to Skippers Canyon. We begin by climbing one of NZ's oldest ski field roads, Coronet Peak, until we get to 600 metres above sea level. This is where the Skippers Road begins. Because of the nature of the road rental cars are not permitted on Skippers Road and clients often mention they are glad they are driving with a professional guide. The road itself climbs to 795 metres above sea level and then descends 3km to the river below.
Once geared up we begin rafting down the river. You will see old gold mining relics littering the riverbanks, pin pointing where the gold was found. The Shotover river was one of the richest gold bearing rivers in the world.
The river is grade 2 which means there are no major violent rapids. Water will splash aboard and there are waves and small rapids to navigate, but nothing our experienced guides can not handle. This means you can enjoy the fun and exhilaration of rafting, with little risk. The guide will inform you of the history and some geography of the area.
