Horse Riding - Ben Lomond Trekking
Description
Gail, Don and the team offer fantastic adventures in a beautiful untouched corner of New Zealand.
Feel the freedom and exhilaration of seeing some of NZ's most spectacular scenery on horseback.
Soak up the alpine flora, wildlife, rugged river gorges and dramatic landscapes.
Learn about the area's gold mining history at the old Moke Creek settlement "Sefferstown" and explore 1860s gold mining sluicings.
We provide friendly, knowledgeable guides and top quality equine management, leaving you free to sit back and enjoy an unforgettable Kiwi experience.
There are three main trips:
Moke Lake
This trek has it all- stunning panoramic lake and mountain vistas, river crossings and plenty of flat terrain for experienced riders to cut loose! A great trek for families.
After riding up the river braid we cross into some of Ben Lomond's flatter terrain. We crest the hill for a fantastic photo opportunity, then ride back to base around Moke Lake, a beautiful swimming and fishing spot.
1.5hrs in the saddle
Ride into the Past
Experience some of NZ’s most amazing and diverse high country while being transported back to the gold mining era.
After winding up through the fantastic scenery of the valley, we boil the billy and have some lunch at Sefferstown, the ruins of an 1880s gold mining village.
Then it’s an exhilarating ride through multiple river crossings and Moke Creek gorge to see more gold mining relics.
Great ‘Kodak moments’ plus opportunities to pick up the pace.
3hrs in the saddle

Everything Queenstown Comments
I had riden a horse only once before so I was a little nervous... ok, a lot nervous about riding a horse again! Sensing my anxiety, Gail and Hope, the incredibly patient, knowledgable and friendly guides, gave me some quick pointers and selected a mild mannered and obedient horse for me by the name of Charlie. We walked, trotted and even cantered for about 2 hours through some amazing scenery with waterfalls, canyons and about 20 or so river crossings. Ok, it's safe to say I didn't quite master the trot but even so, our small group of 5 had an amazing time. I can't ever remember laughing so much as an adult!
Suggestions: Great for experienced riders who want to go hard and also perfect for beginners who'd prefer a leisurely walk and need a little coaching and reassurance. If you're a guy then I'd suggest not planning anything too strenous for the day after, unless of course, unlike me, you figure out how to trot!
