The RungWay - Via Ferrata

Description

The Rungway in Queenstown is the Southern Hemisphere’s first and only Via Ferrata system (which literally translates as Iron Way in Italian). They have been in existence for over a century and were used in the world wars to quickly move troops through the mountainous terrain. Over the years the practice has caught on as a recreational activity in alpine regions around the world. Queenstown’s Rungway allows participants to safely climb impossible looking cliff faces with absolutely no previous climbing experience necessary due to the unique fixed rung and cable system. The Rungway offers 12 routes of varying length and difficultly – all expertly equipped giving access to stunning views across Lake Wakatipu to Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and beyond.

Your guide will help you fit your harness then show you how to use the system of karabiners, cables and rungs. First up is the practice loop, then you’ll take on the sheer adventure of rock faces, and cliffs. Once the adrenalin settles, the rhythm of the movement and the stunning views kick in and the fun really begins. There are 12 routes and which one you take depends on your skill level and sense of adventure. There are routes suitable for everyone, from the absolute beginner to the hard core adventure seeker and they are classified like this:

HANG OUT – The easiest routes with gentle short pitches. A great place to warm into your adventure or for those looking for more of a mellow experience.

STEP UP – A definite step up from the hang out routes with more challenging obstacles and lines.

HANG OUT – The Rungway’s most challenging routes that get the legs wobbling and heart racing. They feature long steep pitches, a lot of exposure and overhangs.
