The Seasons
People sometimes say things are a little back to front in NZ... well the seasons are no different. In a nutshell, it's hot during Christmas and it snows in July! If you're from the Northern Hemisphere then just think opposites. If your friends back home are sipping pool side cocktails then you better bring your winter woolies to Queenstown, and vice versa!

Queenstown Weather
A great NZ band known as Crowded House wrote a famous song about this wonderful country. It's called 'Four Seasons in One Day' and that's exactly what you should consider when attempting to pack your bag for Queenstown. Temperatures vary from minus 5 degress celcius in winter to 30 degrees celcius in summer. The warmest months are December - March and the coldest are May - August.

QANTAS and AirNZ
Most international flights fly direct to Auckland, New Zealand's largets city (1 million people), located at the top of the North Island. Queenstown, however, is located near the bottom of the South Island and is about a 1.5 hour flight south (1500 km). There are two domestic airlines, Air New Zealand and Qantas and flights are scheduled several times a day from each of the major cities (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch).
Qantas and Air NZ fly direct from Melbourne and Sydney to Queenstown on the weekends. With a total flight time of around 3 hours, this is a great option for those on a tight schedule.

ASB Bank
All the major NZ banks are respresented in Queenstown and there are a dozen or so places to change travellers cheques or convert foreign currencies. Most banks are open between 9.30am and 5pm Monday - Friday however the ASB is open 7 days 9.30am - 8pm and is located centrally on Camp street. There are at least half a dozen ATM machines in the town centre open 24 hrs.

Car Rentals
There are nearly more car rental shops in Queenstown than bars, which is really saying something because there is at least one bar on every corner!
Don't be mistaken into thinking you need to hire a car whilst in Quenstown. Taxis are a plenty, hitching is common and relatively safe, all the ski fields have adequate shuttle services and 90% of the hotels and hostels are within a short walk of the town centre.
If you do need a rental car then shop around because cars cost between $19 and $120 per day depending on make of car and time of year.

World Clock
New Zealand is one of the first countries in the world to see the New Year and has, unlike many other countries, only one time zone. It is 12 hours ahead of GMT (England) and 2 hours ahead of the east coast of Australia. If it's dark back home it's probably light down here.

New Zealand Immigration
Thinking of staying for a little longer? Work visas are easy to obtain and can often be sorted within 48 hours if you have a job offer. If you're thinking of staying in this beautiful country for good then it's a little harder but certainly attainable; especially if you have a degree or qualification in an understaffed field. If not then there are always plenty of locals willing to get married for a few extra bucks. Nah, only kidding, that would be illegal!

Queenstown Cinema
Not that you'll have the time to waste sitting in doors! But, if need be there is a cinema loacted in The Mall. (The Mall by the way, is not your usual multi level North American shopping mecca, but rather a quaint little pedestrian only street with some trendy bars, cosy cafes and some boutique shops located in the town centre, right on the waterfront) Just remember, if the movie came out in the US last year then it's probably just been released in NZ!
