Welcome to "Local Lens," an exclusive blog series crafted by Everything Queenstown, where we share our inside take on the range of experiences that this New Zealand adventure town has to offer. Each post in this blog series introduces you to an activity undertaken by one of our team members, not just as the local experts in NZ tourism, but as fellow explorers of the beautiful area that is Queenstown.
In this post, Kiani takes you above and beyond - quite literally - on a 2.5 hour Queenstown helicopter flight with Heliworks Queenstown. Follow along as she recounts the incredible scenery and spectacular alpine landings encountered on the Fiordland's Finest helicopter flight, the ultimate helicopter tour of Fiordland.
Taking the Ultimate Helicopter Tour of Fiordland
Embarking on Heliworks Queenstown's Fiordland’s Finest helicopter flight was like stepping into a realm of pure wonder. From the moment I was picked up from my Queenstown accommodation, to soaring over New Zealand's breathtaking landscapes, every detail of this adventure was crafted to perfection.
Our pilot, the seasoned professional Paul, guided us with ease to the helipad, ensuring our comfort as we boarded the helicopter. As we took off, the panorama of Queenstown unfolded below, a prelude to the wonders awaiting us in Fiordland National Park.
The journey itself was non-stop, with awe-inspiring sights and insightful commentary from Paul. From soaring above Lake Whakatipu to navigating through the snow-peaked Southern Alps, each moment offered a new perspective on the amazing landscapes of New Zealand, epitomising the essence of helicopter tours in Queenstown.
Our first landing at Lake Erskine was surreal - we stood with a glass lake on one side of us and a never-ending green valley on the other. Then, flying over Milford Sound by helicopter and seeing the tiny boats cruising through the fiord really showed the scale of how huge it is! Our Queenstown helicopter flight continued with a landing on Mount Tutoko, the highest peak in Fiordland, allowed us to truly immerse ourselves in the grandeur of the landscape.
However, it was the Earnslaw Burn that stole the show. Paul the pilot flew right up close to the incredible hanging glacier before landing on the serene valley floor. This landing location is for the exclusive use of Heliworks Queenstown, making it a truly unique experience. The sight of the cascading waterfall was simply mesmerising and it was wonderful to see how untouched this area is.
Reflecting on this experience, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore my own backyard in such a spectacular way. Heliworks Queenstown's Fiordland’s Finest flight is more than just a Queenstown activity - it's a testament to the unparalleled beauty of New Zealand and a reminder of how fortunate I am to call this country home. For anyone seeking the adventure of a lifetime, I cannot recommend this experience enough.
