Adventures on the Dart River - Funyaking and Jet Boating from Queenstown

Ever tried Funyaking? Until recently, I hadn’t either! If you’re after a mix of kayaking, rafting and pure fun, this adventure ticks all the boxes. Our day started early with a scenic drive to Glenorchy, a small township about 45 minutes from Queenstown. It is said to be one of the most beautiful drives in New Zealand, and they’re absolutely right - think incredible lake views with snow-capped mountains in the distance. When we arrived, the friendly Dart River Adventures team greeted us and kitted us out with all the gear we’d need. A quick briefing later, we were off to the waterfront, ready to hop aboard the Dart River Wilderness Jet Boat. It was so much fun zipping up the Dart River, with a mix of scenery, high speeds and exciting 360 degree spins!

Once the jet boat had whisked us upriver, we jumped into our Funyaks to float down river. I was blown away by the scenery around us - towering mountains, dense native forests and amazing turquoise-coloured water. It’s not every day you get to paddle through such jaw-dropping landscapes. The pace was nice and relaxed, so there was plenty of time to soak it all in and listen to stories from the knowledgeable guides. Halfway through, we pulled over for a riverside picnic. And let me tell you, nothing works up an appetite like paddling through the wilderness! The lunch spread was fantastic, with everything from sandwiches to hot drinks that warmed us right up.

As we paddled on, the excitement picked up with the guides encouraging us to try to stand up in our Funyaks. The highlight for me was exploring a narrow canyon, where the water turned the most incredible shades of blue and green. By the end of the day, I felt like I’d experienced a slice of true New Zealand beauty. It was the perfect mix of beauty and adventure all rolled into one.
