Description

Horse trekking for all rider level abilities with Horse Country Horses, out in beautiful scenic Glenorchy and surroundings. Around since 1985 and with over 100 horses and 150,000 acres to explore, the team can match you to a special character who is tailored to your specific ability.

Whether you need a quiet schoolmaster who will let you relax and enjoy the scenery, or you are experienced and would like a horse to match your ability. The friendly and passionate guides will take you across rivers, into valleys, and through the willow trees on a ride you’ll never forget.

Rees River Trail - 2.5hrs in the saddle

A perfect half day trek for beginners and experienced riders. Picturesque views of the mountains, glacial river crossings in Rees Valley, and many filming locations from Lord of the Rings. A great tour for beginners to learn and for experienced riders to canter.

Rees River Pro - 3hrs in the saddle (experienced riders only)

Breath taking views in Rees Valley, with picturesque views of the mountains and glacial river crossings. This ride features all the scenic highlights of our Rees River Trail and is where our guides and horses go to play. Opportunities to go at a fast pace and explore the beautiful land. Suitable for experienced riders only, need to be confident and have ridden for a number of years.

Other Information

Self drive required (Queenstown is 45 minutes from Glenorchy)
Minimum age is 7 years old for the Rees River Trial
Minimum age is 8 years old for the Rees River Pro
All children 14 years old and under MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Wear sturdy footwear (toes enclosed). Gym shoes are fine
Bring your camera, sunglasses & water
Maximum weight limit of 95kgs
Please bring long trousers, suitable sturdy footwear, sunglasses, sunscreen
During winter please bring warm layers including socks, gloves, scarf

Awesome must to do activity!!!!! This is one of the best activities my wife and I did while on our holidays. Our guide helena was excellent, and as inexperienced riders made us feel comfortable very quickly. Horses are well trained and know exactly how to behave. The scenery is spectacular.

Hi Pauline and I had an amazing ride with Amanda, Sulley, Spud and Murphy. We are beginner riders but we were taught how to handle and ride the horses comfortably, even if Spud had a few other ideas. We highly recommend High Country Horses to anyone at any level. The scenery and experience blew us away

Where do we check in prior to the ride i.e. what is the address at Glenorchy.

Thanks for your question. The check-in address is 243 Priory road Glenorchy. Please allow enough time to drive from Queenstown to Glenorchy (Approx 45 mins - 1 hour)

Unfortunately, there are no transport options unless you can drive yourself out to Glenorchy.

The High Country horses tour in Glenorchy, you need to meet at the stables which is just a 10-minute drive past Glenorchy. When we send you the booking confirmation it will have all the details of where to meet and what to bring etc but essentially if you are driving up from Queenstown its just another 10 minutes past the small Glenorchy township over the Rees river bridge towards Paradise.

We are 3 adults and 2 kids coming to Queenstown. I have a few questions for you.

1. What is the weight limit for this tour
2. What is the age limit
3. Do you provide transfers from Queenstown?

Thank you for your question about High Country Horses. Unfortunately, the tour operator has a strict maximum weight rule of 95 kg. The age limit is strict to 7 years old and above.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is only a self-drive option to Glenorchy which is about an hour's drive from Queenstown.
