Step back into the 1860s on the Goldrush Tour, a small-group Skippers Canyon tour from Queenstown that follows the same route travelled by early miners. This half-day experience combines dramatic alpine scenery with the stories of the Otago gold rush, brought to life through GPS-activated narration as you journey along the historic Skippers Canyon Road.
Departing from central Queenstown, the tour takes you through the Queenstown Gorge before entering Skippers Canyon, one of New Zealand’s most remarkable historic areas. Professionally recorded stories play in time with the road, giving insight into the lives of the miners, the region’s geology and the cultural impact of the gold rush. Multiple channels are available onboard, including music and dedicated children’s storytelling tracks, ensuring the journey is engaging for every traveller.
Along the way, enjoy photo stops at filming locations featured in The Lord of the Rings, as well as other TV shows and blockbusters. Your driver-guide ensures a comfortable ride throughout while the pre-recorded stories share the history in detail.
The tour concludes at Gantley’s Tavern, a goldmining pub dating back over 160 years, where you can relax with a barista coffee, wine or a beer tasting (included in the price). For those preferring something lighter, morning or afternoon tea is also available.
