As we reach the middle of the ski season, Queenstown’s slopes are looking fantastic, and we’re gearing up for even more snow in the coming weeks! Whether you’re planning your first ski trip or returning for another season, now is the perfect time to hit the slopes and experience the best these mountains have to offer.
Current Snow Conditions in Queenstown
Updated 14th September 2024
Cardrona Alpine Resort has been a star performer this season. After a big snowstorm yesterday, conditions are excellent, with cold dry snow and mid-winter conditions dominating the slopes. There has been 68cm of new snow in the last 7 days alone! The base at 1800m sits at a solid 120cm, and more snowstorms in the forecast will further enhance these already superb conditions. The terrain at Cardrona is perfect for all skill levels, whether you're a family looking for some lessons, or intermediate to advanced skiers keen to explore its wide open slopes.
Over at Treble Cone, the skiing has been equally impressive, with consistent snow showers throughout the season keeping the slopes in top shape. With 50cm received in the last week, the base depth remains strong and the conditions are perfect for those seeking Treble Cone's long uncrowded runs and fantastic off-piste terrain.
Both The Remarkables and Coronet Peak have also been enjoying a great season, with The Remarkables reporting a season snowfall total of 302cm and a snow base ranging from 55 to 220cm. With 51cm of fresh snow in last 48 hours and more snow in the forecast over the next 3 days, the slopes are primed for some epic skiing and boarding.
What’s Coming Next?
Looking ahead, we’re already anticipating more snow on the horizon that will top up the mountains nicely. The forecast predicts snowfall on Sunday and Monday night, with temperatures dipping well below freezing for the rest of the week. It’s shaping up to be another fantastic few weeks on the mountain, so make sure you’re ready to take advantage of these prime conditions!
In previous years, August and September have brought some of the best snow dumps in Queenstown, and we’re expecting more of the same this season. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a first-timer, now’s the time to plan your visit.
Off-Mountain Activities in Queenstown
Even when you’re not on the slopes, Queenstown has plenty to offer. Visitors have already been snapping up the variety of off-mountain Queenstown activities available this winter. From the thrill of jet boating and skydiving (which has been amazing this season!) to the more leisurely TSS Earnslaw lake cruises and wine and beer tours, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re planning to visit Queenstown with your family, we recommend booking your ski passes and activities in advance. This ensures you secure your spots, especially as the Australia and NZ school holidays kick off in late September. For couples and friends, consider planning your trip before the school holidays for quieter slopes and the best conditions. Don’t forget to check out the Winter Pride, Winter Games, and Snow Machine events happening across the region in August and September! Read more about what's on this season.
